AI is a tool we use every single year. This tool allows us to tighten our calving period, extend the use of sires across the cow herd and increase consistency in the calf crop. We select genetics from proven studs, up-and-coming sires and our own herd bulls.
After AI season is complete, the clean-up bulls' jobs begin. These bulls are held to the same standards as our AI sires. The calves sired by these bulls are expected to perform similar to the calves sired by AI. This results in a high quality, consistent calf crop from which we select our sale bulls and replacement heifers.
Breeding Soundness Exams are paramount for any successful breeding program. A bull who is not fertile isn't going to be much help getting cows and heifers pregnant. We take our time performing the exam and cover everything from nose to tail. Strong feet, sound legs, good eyes, mature viable semen, all play a role in getting the job done!
Being in Central Nebraska, we have a variety of feedstuffs available. Quality forages such as alfalfa, nutritious grass hay and pasture. We are also fortunate to be in the middle of the corn belt; this means access to grazing corn stalks in the fall. Salt, mineral and protein supplements are also a part of our nutrition program.
We offer yearling bulls for sale in the spring. Our bulls are grown on forages and a bull-developer pellet. We feed our bulls during a test period from weaning to yearling weight, in order to measure their fullest genetic potential. After yearling weights have been taken, the ration is modified to prevent over-conditioning and prepare them for their working season of breeding females and running pasture.
